Oil Rig Security Jobs

Talk to Airswift today about opportunities to grow your oil rig security career.

Are you looking for an oil rig security job?

The energy industry can be dangerous. For example, kidnapping and piracy are serious security risks for offshore oil companies. Security teams are essential to the safety of all. Oil rigs also have some of the most expensive and complicated pieces of machinery on the planet, which leaves them prone to attacks. Offshore oil rig security jobs are vital for keeping these structures safe at sea and oil rig security officers are important for keeping staff safe on land.

As a security officer, you are vital to ensuring the safety of crew members on offshore oil or gas rigs. In your role as a security officer, you would be performing a range of security operations, from physical guarding of assets to analysing threats and writing reports of daily activities and irregularities - such as equipment or property damage, theft, presence of unauthorised persons, or unusual occurrences.

This role involves assisting the wider security team and other team members on a daily basis to ensure all assets - from machinery to people - are kept safe and secure. Some projects take place on land, but security officials are often required to work offshore.

Responsibilities for a security officer position typically include:

  • Writing reports of daily activities and irregularities - such as equipment or property damage, theft, presence of unauthorized persons, or unusual occurrences.
  • Signing in and out of all personnel to verify they are authorised on location.
  • Checking supporting documents to ensure workers are authorised to access the facility.
  • Calling security teams, police or fire departments in cases of emergency - such as fire or presence of unauthorized persons.
  • Advising individuals of site security requirements.
  • Warning persons of rule infractions or violations

What qualifications do I need to become a security officer?

You do not need formal qualifications for basic security roles but if you want to progress you will require a dedicated security experience portfolio.

Higher education or equivalent required; Bachelor’s degree in Security Management or related field preferred.

For junior roles:

  • Higher education or equivalent required; Bachelor’s degree in Security Management or related field preferred (ideal but not essential)
  • Military or law enforcement experience or several years of related work
  • Possess a professional demeanour, upstanding character, strong morals, and impeccable background record
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in verbal and written communications
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Must be on-call during evenings and weekends and be able to respond to incidents on short notice.

For senior roles:

As above plus the following:

  • Demonstrated ability to resolve conflict and remain calm under pressure
  • Several years of experience in demonstrated supervisory and leadership required
  • Demonstrated knowledge on investigative work covering criminal, corporate security, and close contacts with key law enforcement agencies and personnel (both domestic and foreign)
  • Maintain awareness and technical understanding of state-of-the-art developments in all security disciplines under supervision
  • Demonstrated knowledge of physical security systems.

To work offshore, you must have the Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training Certificate (BOSIET). Many people do the course at their own expense before looking for work. In other cases, some companies sponsor new employees through the course.

Who employs security professionals?

Security vacancies are advertised by major energy companies around the world. There are many international hotspots so it’s common for employers to recruit new talent internationally. Given the nature of security overseas, there may be a greater demand for security professionals in abroad territories

Typical employers include:

  • Operating companies (usually oil companies) that hold exploration and production licences.
  • Energy companies with contracts to do perform.
  • A wide range of other major contractors and companies offering specialist technical services.
