Lead Mechanical Engineer
  • Location: Brisbane
  • 12 Months Casual Contract with probability of turning permanent

Position Purpose
  • Must be able to independently manage, and deliver Conceptual / FEED and / or detailed engineering packages of work, and satisfy requirements specified by the Client or Project
  •  To be responsible for ensuring compliance by discipline team of the design rules and procedures within company. The proposed designs must be safe, economic, sustainable and in accordance with requirements
  •  To manage, train and supervise the work performed by assigned Engineer(s)


Main Accountabilities
  • As required by projects / tenders / studies, undertake role of Principal/Lead Engineer for the relevant project’s discipline engineering scope of work. As required by projects / studies, supervise engineers as defined by project organisation chart
  • Demonstrate and apply exceptional knowledge in the relevant engineering discipline tasks
  • Originate engineering deliverables to meet project, statutory and company rules to project schedule
  •  Independently check and / or approve discipline deliverables to meet project, statutory and company rules
  • Review engineering deliverables and be final checker as required by company check process
  • Be effective, efficient and fit for purpose in the delivery of solutions and documents, and instruct junior engineers on principles of fit-for-purpose engineering
  • Assist assigned Project Manager / Relevant Engineering Discipline Leader define engineering document deliverables for allocated project scope of work
  • Assist assigned Project Manager / Relevant Engineering Discipline Leader define resource requirements meet project technical and schedule requirements, and be responsible for identifying subsequent changes
  • Liaise with Principal Draftsperson on drafting resource requirements for projects. Instruct Drafting Team on engineering drafting requirements for projects
  • Responsible for key interfacing with other engineering disciplines during project execution, and identifying opportunities within other related disciplines
  • Participate in formal and informal reporting to Discipline Lead on progress of engineering tasks, lessons learnt and resources. Identify and escalate areas of concern
  • Supervise discipline engineering performed by Engineering Consultants / Suppliers to meet project, statutory and company rules to project schedule
  • Attend / chair meetings with Clients, Suppliers and / or Consultants to assist on technical issues relating to relevant discipline engineering
  • As required by tenders, prepare and approve appropriate content and lean man-hours estimates to support tender submission, including collation of content from other disciplines
  • Attend vendor/sub-contractor for purpose of surveillance, inspection and testing (Factory Acceptance Test)
  • Provide site engineering supervision / technical assistance for commissioning and start-up
  • Undertake engineering tasks in other engineering disciplines when required
  • Assist Discipline Lead in development of Discipline Engineering Technical Notes and Guidelines
  •  Build positive relationships within company and externally within related professional entities
  • Develop and maintain knowledge of company technologies and products relevant to a Mechanical Engineer
  • Show respect for co-workers and a willingness to proactively address multi-disciplinary problems and an ongoing commitment to self-improvement. Identify and escalate HR issues within allocated teams to Discipline Lead

     

Skills and Experience

Qualifications (educational, professional)       
  • University Degree in Engineering relevant to the discipline from a reputable institution, for instance as recognised by the Institute of Engineers Australia, or international equivalent (IMechE, ICHemE)
     
Knowledge/Skills (consider practical, technical and managerial knowledge) 
  • Computer Literate
  • Preferred software experience: Caesar II, PV Elite, SmartPlant, Microsoft Excel + several of the preferred software tools.
  • Expert written English for technical report preparation
  • Demonstrable knowledge of relevant engineering discipline
  • Commercial awareness and management of change

Experience (consider the typical career path the incumbent would have)        
  • Minimum of 12 years’ experience in relevant engineering discipline
  • Significant experience working within the oil and gas industry
  • Prior experience of holding a leadership position in project roles
  • Prior experience of checking a wide range of technical deliverables including equipment tendering packages, calculations, simulations, drawings and reports
