Airswift is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer III for our nuclear client site in Southport, NC.
Responsibilities:
- Develop the scope, technical basis, installation, and testing requirements for engineering design changes, including but not limited to pumps, valves, piping, heat exchangers, pressure vessels, turbines, HVAC systems, etc.
- Research engineering and design issues, evaluate alternative solutions, determine and present recommendations to resolve various issues.
- Provide ongoing support of assigned engineering design changes through work order reviews, corrective action program assignments, and field installation support activities.
- Develop or revise design specifications and technical requirement documents to support engineering design changes.
- Develop or revise complex engineering calculations impacted by engineering design changes.
- Develop safety screens and evaluations that support engineering design changes.
- Revise site design basis documents, design drawings, and regulatory documents impacted by engineering design changes.
The selected individual will perform engineering work for mechanical projects within the Design Engineering organization. Responsibilities will include design package development for a variety of plant modifications, developing conceptual designs and specifications for bidding purposes, evaluating alternative solutions, providing technical support during implementation, coordinating design efforts with outside vendors, and conducting reviews of design packages developed by other engineers. The selected individual will be required to qualify in the necessary duty areas to act independently as a Responsible Engineer for developing modification packages, calculations, and specifications. Current and past qualifications and experience from other utilities can be used as an acceptable alternative. Current qualification at a nuclear utility as a Modification Engineer, Calculation Preparer, or Design Verifier with knowledge of Passport, Consolidated Asset Suite (CAS), and/or Nuclear Asset Suite (NAS) for design package and work order development is highly desirable. Experience in Operations is considered a desirable trait as well. The selected individual will act as the Lead Technical and/or Responsible Engineer for assigned projects and in a support capacity for projects led by other disciplines such as Electrical, Civil/Structural, and I&C. Lastly, the individual will be expected to exhibit sound technical judgment and provide guidance to the engineering, planning, and implementation teams throughout the life cycle of plant modification packages.

- Replacement of Feedwater Heaters
- Installation of Reactor Feed Pump Turbine Lube Oil Sump Vapor Extractor
- Motor Operated Valve Replacements
- Emergency Diesel Generator Overspeed Trip Modification
- Standby Liquid Control Valve Upgrades
- Halon System Replacement
- Main Steam Isolation Valve Upgrades, and many more
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) or equivalent BS degree with relevant work experience
- 15+ years of engineering experience in the nuclear industry with experience in design modification package preparation
- Ability to obtain and maintain unescorted access to a nuclear facility (General Employee Training, Radiation Worker Training, Security Clearance checks, and subject to the site’s Fitness for Duty Program)
- Strong oral/written communication skills within a professional environment
- Skilled in researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting those recommendations to a project team
- Must be able to work in a team environment
Preferred Qualifications:
- Registration/Licensure as a Professional Engineer
- Engineering experience at a nuclear plant
- Experience in the 10CFR50.59 with respect to designing modifications to a nuclear facility
- Experience with the nuclear industry standard design process
