Our client is seeking a Piping Design Lead to work within their facilities located in Houston, TX, for a one-year assignment.

The Lead Piping and Plant Designer is responsible for providing technical expertise on all E&C projects of our client. Utilizing knowledge across multiple disciplines to produce a inherently safer, cost-effective facility by managing the piping designs and layouts.  This position provides an expert level perspective and input and provides a technical oversight of multiple projects at different stages of development and ensures engineering standards and procedures are followed.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Provides expert knowledge of piping and plant layout practices and industry trends to produce fit-for-purpose designs which result in inherently safer facilities that are constructable, maintainable and operable.
  • Makes design decisions based on full awareness of viability, cost, risk, and potential benefits while identifying opportunities for cost reduction and continuous improvement.
  • Assesses feasibility or technical content of proposed designs with limited data.
  • Interfaces and responds to technical queries from internal stakeholders, EPC Contractors, subcontractors, suppliers, and other counterparties as required.
  • Reviews piping material inquiry/purchase requisitions & technical bid evaluations to ensure accuracy and compliance with project requirements.
  • Interfaces with EPC contractor team, vendors, and other members of SI organization and its subsidiaries.
  • Participates in external and facilitate internal 3D model reviews.
  • Reviews, updates and approves engineering standards.  Creates new standards as needed.
  • Reviews vendor drawings and data, test procedures, reports and calculations to ensure compliance with project requirements.
  • Attends industry-related conferences representing SI and serve as an ambassador for SI’s business interests.
  • Provides project and business line assurance by providing oversight of piping engineering and design scope, activities and deliverables across all projects
  • Performs other duties as assigned (no more than 5% of duties).
Required Skills:
  • Ability to read and interpret process and mechanical diagrams (PFD, UFD, MSD, DPDT), including flow charts and Piping and Instrument Diagrams (P&IDs)
  • Possess practical knowledge and/or application experience with ASME B31.3; ASME Section VIII, Div 1 and 2; ASTM; and API design standards applicable to piping components and mechanical equipment
  • Skilled in application of nomograph and similar analytical methods to determine sufficient flexibility in piping systems
  • Must possess a strong knowledge of NFPA, API, ASME, ASTM, PIP, MSS and other process industry codes and standards.
  • Demonstrated understanding and application of deliverables prepared by engineering disciplines (Process, Technical Safety, Civil, Structural, Architectural, Mechanical, Marine, Electrical, and Instrumentation).
  • Knowledgeable in surveying, construction, commissioning & start-up techniques and practices
  • Must possess technical knowledge in specification of piping systems and valves
  • Knowledgeable in coating and insulation systems, including current industry practices to mitigate external corrosion and CUI.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments with various deadlines and responsibility levels concurrently.
  • Strong interpersonal skills are required to enable effective written and verbal communication exhibiting courtesy and professionalism.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in referencing, researching, reporting, tracking and monitoring activities and documents.
  • Completes tasks as assigned with no supervision.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, Power Point).
Education/Experience:
  • Associate degree in mechanical engineering or another related field, or an equivalent training/accreditation required
  • 18 years of industry related experience as a Piping Engineer or Piping Designer. Experience should include plot plan arrangements that employ gas turbine-driven equipment, large process or refrigerant compressors, air-cooled heat exchangers, vessels, trayed towers, fired heaters, flares, pumps and auxiliary support systems and/or skid mounted packaged systems.
  • 10 years of demonstrated history of leading piping engineering teams on major capital projects.
  • On-site experience within operating and non-operating.
