Job Description
 
This role carries out tasks within the income tax reporting function for assigned entities within the Calgary Tax Services Department. It includes tax compliance, tax accounting and research activities and provides back up and general administrative support to the Manager Tax Compliance and other members of the Corporate Income Tax Reporting Department as required.
 
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Required:
• University Degree in Business Administration or other related discipline
• 7 to 10 years Canadian tax preparation or related experience preferred
• Proficiency with Corporate Taxprep, Taxprep Forms
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel).
• Strong written and oral communication skills
 
Preferred:
• Preference given to those with prior Corporate tax experience
• Familiarity with Oracle cloud and HFM will be an asset
 
Specific Accountabilities
• Responsible for reviewing accounting policies and business unit operations to determine the accounting and tax treatment for assigned entities within the Calgary Tax Services Department with some degree of independence.
• The income tax compliance includes timely and accurate preparation of federal and provincial income tax returns including, but not limited to, partnership returns, trust returns, foreign affiliate and other non-resident forms for all the assigned companies.
• Determine the appropriate impact of transactions on the adjusted cost base (ACB) calculations for assigned entities and supports the tax planning function need for information. Maintains adequate supporting documentation.
• Assists with foreign tax filings include but are not limited, W-8BEN-E and W9 process.
• Assists in the preparation and evaluation of ad-hoc requests within the Calgary Tax Services Department
• Assists with federal and provincial income tax audits as it relates to entities in the Calgary Tax Services Department. Compile and prepare documentation as requested by the auditors and prepare responses to audit queries.
• Contributes to the positive team environment of the Calgary Tax Services Department.
• Develops and maintains a strong understanding of the business.
• Assists with indirect tax compliance function by preparing various GST and Customs forms.
 
Scope:
• The Canadian Tax Reporting function includes Canadian income tax compliance for approximately 216 reporting entities. This role supports the compliance function for approximately 50 of those entities.
• The Tax Services Department includes approximately 80 tax professionals
• Due to critical deadlines and the business environment the workload can be demanding and requires the ability to effectively manage conflicting priorities
 
Contacts/Working Relationships
• Reports Directly to Manager, Income Tax Compliance
• Works closely with all members of the Calgary Tax Services Department and liaises with members of the Toronto, Edmonton, Chatham and Houston Tax Services Department.
• Works closely with all members of the Tax Services Departments as well as other internal departments such as the Controller’s group, Legal, HR, Risk, and Business
