Whiting Refinery

Case Study

Background

In May 2008, our client began construction on the multi- billion dollar Whiting Refinery Modernization Project (WRMP). The project included the construction of new coker and crude distillation units, a new gas oil hydrotreater, modernization of the refinery’s water treating facilities and other environmental efficiencies. In total, the project increased Whiting’s gasoline production by 1.7 million gallons a day.

Challenge

Airswift was tasked with providing 2,000+ skilled workers required for the project while utilising the local talent pool to its full capacity. Ongoing project cost and economic pressures added additional cost awareness to the project delivery plan.

Airswift Solution

Airswift managed a fully compliant on- boarding process for all workers and third- party contractors and had an incident-free transition of all existing technical contractors to Airswift with zero disruption to the business and 100 per cent transfer rate. The requisition process was streamlined and the technical fill rate was improved by 28 per cent.

Results

Airswift delivered $1.4 million initial cost savings through day-rate industry salary benchmarking and ongoing savings of $4 million continued throughout the duration of the contract. Airswift led supplier safety efforts, achieving the Safety Recognition Award for safety performance in 2012, and achieved an overall contractor satisfaction rating of 94 per cent throughout the project.

“One of the reasons we chose Airswift was their commitment to recruit local talent with a physical presence. We also found Airswift to be cost-effective and because it is a global company, it could provide people with future opportunities.”
