Role Purpose

The Decommissioning Advisor provides technical expertise and leadership support during unexpected challenges in offshore decommissioning projects. This role ensures continuity of operations by acting as a problem solver and guide when unforeseen issues arise, allowing the core team to maintain focus on planned work.

Key Responsibilities

  • Technical Problem-Solving:

    • Assess and respond to unexpected discoveries during decommissioning (e.g., oil columns in pipelines, hidden internal structures).
    • Collaborate with engineers to develop practical, fit-for-purpose solutions.
  • Leadership Support:

    • Provide backup to the leadership team during critical situations or when key personnel are unavailable.
    • Maintain team momentum and ensure planned work continues without major disruption.
  • Recovery Program Development:

    • Design and implement recovery strategies for complex issues such as trapped oil in seabed piles.
    • Coordinate with global experts when first-of-their-kind challenges arise.
  • Risk Management:

    • Quickly evaluate technical risks and propose mitigation measures.
    • Ensure compliance with safety and environmental standards during problem resolution.

Examples of Challenges

  • Oil discovered in a pipeline previously cleaned, requiring cutting and recovery.
  • Vessel cleaning revealed an internal wall not shown on drawings, necessitating a pivot in approach.
  • Seabed piles contained trapped oil 30m below waterline, requiring a bespoke recovery program.

Ideal Candidate Profile

Experience:

  • 10+ years in facilities engineering, preferably offshore.
  • Decommissioning experience is highly desirable but not essential.

Skills:

  • Strong understanding of facilities and pipeline systems.
  • Ability to assess, adapt, and collaborate effectively with engineering teams.
  • Practical, hands-on approach with a proactive mindset.

Attributes:

  • Resilient, adaptable, and solution-oriented.
  • Jack-of-all-trades with strong problem-solving capability.
  • Diversity encouraged to balance team composition.

Why This Role Matters

Unexpected technical challenges can derail progress and distract the team from core objectives. The Decommissioning Advisor ensures continuity, provides leadership backup, and drives resolution of complex problems—keeping projects on schedule and within safety parameters.
