Role Purpose
The Decommissioning Advisor provides technical expertise and leadership support during unexpected challenges in offshore decommissioning projects. This role ensures continuity of operations by acting as a problem solver and guide when unforeseen issues arise, allowing the core team to maintain focus on planned work.
Key Responsibilities
-
Technical Problem-Solving:
- Assess and respond to unexpected discoveries during decommissioning (e.g., oil columns in pipelines, hidden internal structures).
- Collaborate with engineers to develop practical, fit-for-purpose solutions.
-
Leadership Support:
- Provide backup to the leadership team during critical situations or when key personnel are unavailable.
- Maintain team momentum and ensure planned work continues without major disruption.
-
Recovery Program Development:
- Design and implement recovery strategies for complex issues such as trapped oil in seabed piles.
- Coordinate with global experts when first-of-their-kind challenges arise.
-
Risk Management:
- Quickly evaluate technical risks and propose mitigation measures.
- Ensure compliance with safety and environmental standards during problem resolution.
Examples of Challenges
- Oil discovered in a pipeline previously cleaned, requiring cutting and recovery.
- Vessel cleaning revealed an internal wall not shown on drawings, necessitating a pivot in approach.
- Seabed piles contained trapped oil 30m below waterline, requiring a bespoke recovery program.
Ideal Candidate Profile
Experience:
- 10+ years in facilities engineering, preferably offshore.
- Decommissioning experience is highly desirable but not essential.
Skills:
- Strong understanding of facilities and pipeline systems.
- Ability to assess, adapt, and collaborate effectively with engineering teams.
- Practical, hands-on approach with a proactive mindset.
Attributes:
- Resilient, adaptable, and solution-oriented.
- Jack-of-all-trades with strong problem-solving capability.
