  • The Construction Quality Explosive Environment Inspector to oversee the construction phase of an FPSO (Floating Production Storage and Offloading) unit at a shipyard.
  • You ensure that all equipment, structures, and installations comply with safety standards for explosive environments (ATEX/IECEx) and that proper measures are in place to prevent any hazards related to potential explosive atmospheres.

Responsibilities

  • You are responsible for all construction activities within explosive environments (classified areas) of the FPSO are conducted according to industry safety standards (e.g., ATEX, IECEx, NEC), project specifications, and regulatory requirements.
  • You inspect and assess all hazardous area zones during the construction phase to ensure that appropriate classifications, protective measures, and equipment are installed in compliance with safety standards for explosive environments.
  • You oversee construction activities in explosive atmosphere zones to ensure compliance with the necessary explosion protection protocols, including the use of flameproof enclosures, intrinsically safe equipment, and other safety mechanisms.
  • You verify the installation and compliance of explosion-proof electrical equipment, wiring, and instrumentation. Inspect materials used in explosive environments to ensure they are suitable for use in hazardous areas.
  • You ensure proper implementation of explosion protection methods (e.g., flame arresters, pressure relief systems, ventilation) as per the design requirements and applicable safety regulations.
  • You maintain comprehensive inspection records, including detailed reports of inspections, non-conformances, corrective actions, and compliance with explosion protection standards. Report any discrepancies or risks associated with explosive environments to the Construction Ex Lead, Project / Area Construction Quality Manager and Ex engineering teams.

  • Certification in explosive atmosphere safety standards (e.g., ATEX, IECEx, NEC, or equivalent) is mandatory. Additional certifications in hazardous area classification and explosion protection methods are highly desirable.
  • FPSO or Offshore Experience: Previous experience on FPSO or offshore construction projects is highly desirable.

Experience

  • Proven experience in safety inspection and quality control within explosive environments, particularly in offshore, oil & gas, or shipbuilding industries, with specific knowledge of FPSO construction.
  • Strong knowledge of hazardous area classification systems (e.g., Zone 0, Zone 1, Zone 2) and the relevant standards and codes (e.g., IEC 60079, ATEX Directive).
  • In-depth knowledge of explosion protection techniques and equipment, including flameproof enclosures, intrinsic safety, pressurization systems, and purge systems used in hazardous areas.
  • Strong understanding of health, safety, and environmental regulations associated with explosive environments, with a commitment to maintaining a safe working environment.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills to identify and mitigate potential risks associated with explosive atmospheres.
