Job Title: Head of Metallurgy & Welding

Job Purpose

The Head of Metallurgy & Welding is responsible for coordinating all technical quality-related efforts in material science and metallurgy during the procurement, design, manufacture, fabrication, delivery, and installation of equipment and services for major projects. This role ensures the integrity and compliance of materials and welding processes across all phases of project execution.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Leadership & Oversight

  2. Lead a team of subject matter experts in metallurgy, welding, fabrication, and inspection.
  3. Oversee technical quality, material processing, qualification, failure investigation, and testing.
  4. Material & Process Qualification

  5. Design and manage qualification programs for mills, forging, casting, fabrication, and coating facilities.
  6. Technical Investigations

  7. Conduct metallurgical investigations and root cause analyses using structured problem-solving tools.
  8. Quality Reporting

  9. Provide regular technical updates to the Quality Manager and recommend improvements.
  10. Technical Support

  11. Advise engineers and technicians on material selection, usage, and compliance.
  12. Infrastructure Development

  13. Oversee the design and development of new equipment and infrastructure related to materials and welding.
  14. Regulatory Compliance

  15. Ensure adherence to safety and environmental regulations in materials usage.
  16. Issue Resolution

  17. Investigate and resolve quality and technical issues, including non-conformances and deviation requests.
  18. Product Development

  19. Lead product development trials using Design of Experiment (DoE) methodologies.
  20. Stakeholder Engagement

  21. Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders including EPC contractors, manufacturers, and regulatory bodies.

Job Context & Challenges

  • Manage complex technical challenges across multiple projects.
  • Support Project Management Teams (PMTs) by reviewing specifications, standards, and technical queries.
  • Evaluate and qualify new material manufacturers globally.
  • Provide expert consultation on corrosion, fracture mechanics, heat treatment, and failure mechanisms.

Qualifications & Experience

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Sciences.

Experience

  • Minimum 15 years in quality roles within the oil and gas industry.
  • At least 5 years in a supervisory or oversight role.
  • Extensive experience in metallurgy, material science, fabrication, and construction.
  • Exposure to topsides, pipelines, subsea valves/manifolds, and related inspection processes.
  • Experience with international energy companies preferred.

Certifications

  • Certified Welding Inspector.
  • Certified Quality Manager.
  • Certified Lead Auditor.
  • Minimum Level II NDT Inspector.
  • Advanced leadership and failure analysis training.

Technical & Business Skills

  • Proficiency in ISO 9001, API Q1/Q2 Quality Management Systems.
  • Strong analytical, leadership, and facilitation skills.
  • Excellent communication and influencing abilities.
  • Fluent in written and spoken English.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
