Airswift is currently looking for a LNG I&C Engineer to work in Houston for a major LNG project on an initial 1-year contract.

The Senior Instrument and Controls (I&C) Engineer will provide technical assurance and guidance for all I&C matters during the development and detailed design phases of the LNG liquefaction projects.

Acting as Owner's representative, this role involves reviewing, auditing, and inspecting that the EPC's design and construction of I&C systems and components are fit for purpose, compliant with project specifications, regulations, and industry codes and standards. Ensure that all I&C equipment is designed, purchased, inspected and installed safely and perform to the requirements of the design.

Support the commissioning and start-up of the project. Work within a multi-discipline team and assist other engineers and respond to questions from other disciplines. This position reports to the I&C Lead for the project, activities will be directed by the I&C Lead or Management. Occasionally leading the I&C and Telecommunications disciplines on assigned tasks or projects.

This position is intended for a senior-level engineer who can perform deep technical reviews of instrumentation and control deliverables and collaborate effectively within a high-performing team.

Location & Travel:?Based in Houston, TX (primarily at the EPC contractor’s office). Regular travel is required for site support, inspections, FATs/IFATs, audits, and to support construction, commissioning, and start-up activities. Travel is expected to be less than 25% of the time.

Key Qualifications and Role Context

  • Role Scope (Not a Lead Position): Reports to the project I&C Lead. The emphasis is on technical depth rather than managerial or lead responsibilities.
  • Collaboration: Strong teamwork and communication skills are essential for success in a well-established, high-performing I&C team.
  • Instrumentation Expertise (priority over controls specialization): The ideal candidate is a well-rounded Instrumentation and Controls engineer with strong instrumentation expertise as the primary focus. This includes advanced knowledge and significant experience in:
  • Material selection
  • Process condition review
  • Instrument sizing and calculations
  • Specification verification
  • Wiring Diagram Review
  • Installation details and hook-ups
  • Level-setting calculations

While proficiency in control systems is required, candidates whose primary background is as a Control Systems Engineer or whose experience is predominantly focused on ICSS/DCS/SIS/F&G systems will not be considered. The role demands a balanced skill set, with instrumentation as the core strength and controls knowledge as a complementary capability.

  • Process Integration: Demonstrated ability to analyze, contribute to, and implement process and operational requirements by interpreting process engineering deliverables, such as P&IDs, HMB, PFDs, process conditions, and operating ranges, to ensure they are accurately and practically translated to instrumentation specifications and project design. This includes ensuring alignment between process design intent, operational needs, and instrumentation design.
  • Owner Role: This is an owner-side engineering position (not a hands-on maintenance/technician role). Owner-side experience is preferred but not mandatory if other requirements are met.
  • References & Track Record: Strong professional references; preference for candidates with demonstrated stability and completion of projects.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide support across project phases, including reviewing datasheets, detailed wiring diagrams, instrument calculations, construction/work packages, quality assurance documents, and tracking project deliverables; provide technical support during construction, commissioning, and start-up.
  • Audit the EPC's design in all the matters related to telecommunication, instrumentation, and control systems, including those inside the vendor packages.
  • Review EPC's and suppliers' deliverables such as P&IDs, all instrumentation and telecommunication relevant documentation (instrument location plan, instrument hook-up, installation details, instrument index, logic diagrams, loop and wiring drawings, instrumentation datasheets, cause & effect diagrams, sizing calculations sheets and reports, among others).
  • Participate in design reviews and assess outcomes of risk studies such as HAZOP, SIL/LOPA, and alarm rationalization, support P&ID reviews and process hazard identification activities.
  • Participate in Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), inspections, IFATs.
  • Participate in or lead special technical studies, reports, presentations as may be requested.
  • Review PSV datasheets, specifications, and associated engineering calculations to ensure compliance with process conditions and project standards.
  • Review spare parts lists and prepare recommendations for commissioning and operational spares; align with project philosophies and O&M needs.
  • Support field and field walkdowns, as required
  • Provide Engineering support to the field activities.
  • Develop sketches, diagrams, and presentations to communicate technical concepts and recommendations to team /project team.
  • Perform other duties as assigned (no more than 5% of duties).

  • Bachelor’s degree in Instrument & Controls Engineering required; Electronics, Electrical and/or Process Engineering preferred.

Experience

  • 8+ years of experience in LNG, Cryogenic, or Oil & Gas plants required.
  • At least 3 years of Field construction and commissioning experience preferred.
  • Advanced proficiency in instrumentation engineering, including material selection, process condition review, and sizing/calculations required.
  • Proficiency in reviewing PSV datasheets and specifications; understanding PSV engineering principles required.
  • Experience with control and safeguarding systems for standard centrifugal compressors equipment used in LNG plants required.
  • Experience with controls systems installed in the client infrastructure: Emerson DeltaV, DeltaV SIS, Controllogix, CCC, MarkVie, MarkVieS, preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Comprehensive understanding of I&C engineering principles and interfaces with related disciplines; strong grasp of engineering and construction practices.
  • Advanced technical knowledge of instrumentation and control systems, including BPCS, SIS, Fire & Gas, HIPPS, anti-surge systems, metering skids, in-line instrumentation, control valves, ESDVs, pressure relief valves, and gas chromatographs.
  • Working knowledge of PSV sizing, selection, and engineering practices in LNG or oil & gas applications.
  • Ability to interpret and validate PFDs, P&IDs, control narratives, complex loops, loop diagrams, logic diagrams, and cause & effect matrices for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with project standards.
  • Proven ability to apply LNG industry codes and standards—including API, IEC/ISA, ASME, NFPA 59A, NFPA 72, NFPA 70, ANSI/ISA-18.2, and IEC/ISA 61511—in design reviews, compliance assessments, and technical evaluations.
