Production Technician

Position Overview

The Production Technician is responsible for safely and efficiently producing wells and pads along an assigned route. This role focuses on meeting production and inspection targets, identifying and resolving production variances, and collaborating with field, optimization, and engineering teams to maintain peak operational performance.


Key Responsibilities

Daily Production Management

  • Identify production variances using approved production monitoring and SCADA tools
  • Ensure all wells meet or exceed clean average (target production)
  • Develop and execute step?by?step action plans for underperforming wells
  • Escalate support needs in the following order:
    1. Lead Area Technician
    2. Production Optimizer
    3. Production Foreman
    4. Engineer
  • Communicate daily actions and route updates via the designated operations communication channel
  • Review production volumes and escalate calculation discrepancies to Engineering

Operational Metrics & Compliance

Site Inspections

  • Ensure no overdue site inspections
  • Verify inspection status using reporting dashboards or inspection reports

Plunger Inspections

  • Ensure inspections are current and within KPI guidelines:
    • No more than 5,000 miles
    • No more than 12 months old

Verifications & Gaps

  • Perform production verifications and gap analysis using approved field tools
  • Meet an annual individual verification?to?gap target ratio of 15%

Production Coding

  • Ensure all production and downtime coding is accurate and current
  • Confirm:
    • “Normal Operations – No Action” wells are correctly classified
    • Base backout wells have undergone full troubleshooting before assigning underperformance status
    • Wells producing above clean average are returned to Normal Operations
  • Follow up on wells remaining in engineering or optimization status longer than 7 days
  • Guidance: Any interaction with a well requires a downtime code entry

Field Support & Assistance

  • Coordinate additional support when sites require maintenance or automation work
  • Create work orders for appropriate disciplines when needed
  • Ensure all valve manipulations comply with Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) policy
  • Assist in other field areas when primary route work is completed and metrics are met

Daily Work Expectations

Work Prioritization

  • Address tasks identified during morning dispatch or triggered by intraday alarms

On?Site Procedures

  • Place safety cone at pad entrance
  • Create work orders for site entry checklists and Job Safety Analyses (JSA)
  • Perform required operational or maintenance tasks
  • Update well or pad deferment codes with detailed comments
  • Close or escalate work orders as appropriate

Safety & Coordination

  • Complete independent JSA for automation or maintenance tasks unless performed by a crew
  • Review and approve crew JSAs when applicable
  • Communicate handover requirements to night operations staff
  • Collect facility run tickets every three days (during initial operatorship phases)
  • Maintain housekeeping standards:
    • Trash removal
    • Proper signage
    • Standardized handovers
    • Timely work order creation

Technical Knowledge & Training Requirements

Artificial Lift Systems

Candidates must demonstrate or be willing to learn the following:

Plunger Lift

  • Basic system operation and troubleshooting
  • Performing plunger inspections
  • Use of calipers, removal tools, SOPs, and spare parts
  • Understanding of plunger programs and inspection processes

Gas Lift

  • Relationship between casing and tubing pressure
  • Effects of over? and under?injection
  • Surface equipment operation
  • SCADA?based troubleshooting
  • Ability to recognize injection issues via flow data

Other Lift & Flow Types

  • Wellhead compression
  • Free?flowing wells:
    • Casing flow
    • Tubing flow
    • Annular and tubing production (OTAP)

Technology & Systems

  • Production monitoring platforms
  • SCADA systems
  • Work management systems
  • Safety and compliance platforms
  • Documentation, communication, and mapping tools

Equipment & Facility Scope

Responsibilities may include operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and startup/shutdown of:

  • Wellheads
  • Separators (HP/LP)
  • Compressors and scrubbers
  • Heater treaters
  • Coolers and air compressors
  • Chemical systems and fuel gas systems
  • Tank level management systems
  • Valves and control equipment
  • Containment and cellar systems
  • H?S treating and safety equipment

Schedule & Location

  • Work Schedule: 10/4 (Tuesday–Friday)
    Hours: 6:30 AM – 5:00 PM
  • Location: Candidates must reside within 60 miles of Yorktown

  • 4-wheel drive truck
  • Personal tools
  • Laptop and mobile phone (BYOD)
  • 4-gas monitor
  • Required PPE (must be provided by worker on Day One)

Mileage & Allowances

  • Mileage reimbursed at IRS rate for in?field travel only
  • Mileage begins at first work site and ends at last site before returning home
  • On-call callouts are paid from departure from home

Required Trainings

  • OSHA H2S
  • OSHA HAZWOPER 
  • OSHA First Aid & CPR
