Senior Process Safety Engineer
Duration: 12 month initial contract
Location: Remote, with trips to Angola as required
Start date: ASAP
Position Overview
This position provides advanced process engineering and process safety technical support to asset operations within the energy sector. The responsibilities focus on risk management, process integrity, operational risk oversight, and compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements. The role works closely with maintenance and site teams to ensure integration of engineering input, risk management, and production optimization across critical oil and gas offshore facilities.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Excellence & Risk Management
- Deliver and review complex engineering simulations, calculations, and analysis for process and safety requirements.
- Provide technical support for Management of Change (MoC) activities, projects, design reviews, procurement, feasibility studies, and regulatory compliance.
- Support hazard identification, MoCs, HAZOPs, LOPAs, HAZIDs, Human Factors Analysis, vulnerability studies, and development of risk action plans.
- Participate in and provide input for incident investigations and root cause analyses related to process safety issues.
- Review barrier health assessments and lead actions to improve barrier effectiveness.
- Engage with digitalization initiatives defining operational requirements for the discipline and contributing to digital solution design and implementation.
- Ensure adherence to safety standards such as API, ISO, IOGP, and internal guidelines.
- Provide operational technical input during shutdowns, start-ups, and major maintenance events.
- Coordinate with offshore operational teams for real-time troubleshooting and support.
Equipment Strategy & Performance
- Support development and deployment of equipment strategies for pressure vessels, heat exchangers, pumps, and compressors.
- Review equipment performance data and recommend enhancements to improve reliability and minimize downtime.
- Collaborate with maintenance and integrity sections for alignment with process requirements.
Contract Management & Oversight
- Assist in contract performance management and act as Job Representative for assigned engineering contracts.
- Oversee contractor activities that support asset operations and ensure contract deliverables are met.
Stakeholder Engagement
- Liaise with discipline coordinators, offshore operations teams, production management, maintenance support, reliability, integrity management, and subsea engineering sections.
- Follow up on resolution of multi-discipline technical issues from HAZOP/LOPA, incident learning, process safety, audits, MoCs, vulnerabilities, and engineering studies.
Coaching & Development
- Support development and coaching of less experienced engineers, encouraging attainment of professional accreditation.
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering or a related discipline.
- Minimum of five years’ experience in process engineering and process safety, ideally within offshore oil and gas operations.
- Demonstrated experience and understanding of engineering, maintenance, and operation of oil and gas processing facility equipment.
- Knowledge of relevant codes, industry standards, and practical application within the discipline.
- Accreditation in engineering (process safety certification advantageous).
Key Competencies
- Proven ability in risk management, process safety management, and contractor performance management.
- Ability to interact effectively across field and office environments with multidisciplinary teams.
- Proficient in process simulation tools (e.g., HYSYS, Aspen) and strong analytical/problem-solving skills.
- Proactive approach to ensuring safety, compliance, and the delivery of solutions under pressure.
