Airswift is seeking a Contact Engineer to work with one of our O&G clients in Whitecourt, AB on a 1-year contract position. 

The Contact Engineer is an asset-based, non-discipline-specific role serving as the Asset/System Subject Matter Expert (SME). This position focuses on real-time operational support, cross-functional alignment, and prioritization of engineering work across the asset.

The role acts as the primary interface between Operations and Engineering, ensuring efficient communication, issue resolution, and alignment with business priorities.


Key Accountabilities

  • Provide real-time engineering support to operations
  • Prioritize and coordinate engineering activities across multiple teams
  • Track and drive resolution of asset issues to completion
  • Align efforts across Process, Discipline Engineering, Projects, TSU, PQM, and E&C
  • Support decision-making using a holistic understanding of asset performance and business needs
  • Maintain awareness of long-range asset plans, including outages, risks, expansions, and initiatives
  • Partner with Process Engineering to identify optimization opportunities and debottlenecking solutions

Primary Stakeholder Interface

Acts as the first point of contact for:

  • Field Operations
  • Control Room / Panel Operations
  • SPCC and Gas Control
  • Maintenance Teams
  • E&C Execution
  • Discipline Engineering
  • Project Engineering
  • Technical Services (TSU)
  • Commercial (current operations support)

Core Responsibilities

Operational Support

  • Serve as first call for technical issues and break-in work requiring engineering support
  • Provide field-level support for Discipline Engineering and Technical Services initiatives
  • Assist with process engineering calculations and data collection
  • Support rate test coordination and operational troubleshooting

Process Safety & Risk Management

  • Collaborate continuously with Process Engineering to identify and assess operating risks
  • Drive risk awareness and prioritize mitigation strategies
  • Execute defined actions to address process safety risks
  • Participate in:
    • HAZOP revalidations
    • Process Hazard Analyses (PHAs)
    • Operational Readiness Assessments (ORAs)

Investigations & Performance Improvement

  • Support SMART investigations
  • Participate in and facilitate Root Cause Failure Analyses (RCFA)
  • Optimize sales product composition
  • Identify system optimization and debottleneck opportunities

Project & Change Management

  • Manage Management of Change (MOC) processes for:
    • Operational changes
    • Equipment modifications
    • Projects under $200K (unless discipline-led)
  • Support project lifecycle activities:
    • Project intake and data gathering
    • AFE prioritization
    • Budget development and justification of engineering-driven work
  • Provide Asset SME support to:
    • E&C Development
    • E&C Execution
    • Operations Project Engineering

Planning & Asset Strategy

  • Support long-range asset planning and lifecycle management
  • Ensure small-scale (<$200K) engineering projects are properly budgeted
  • Contribute to prioritization of Project Engineering AFEs

Additional Support Activities

Includes, but not limited to:

  • Isolation planning (e.g., single isolations, controlled isolation valves, carseal management)
  • ORA facilitation and support
  • Procedure development
  • External energy reviews
  • CER redline management outside standard MOC/project work
  • MAP program participation
  • Task Hazard Analysis (THA) development (e.g., pipeline purges)
  • Temporary modifications (e.g., stopple/bypass support)
  • Asset integrity programs:
    • Abandonment planning
    • Dead leg management

On-Site Requirements

  • Regular on-site presence based on operational and leadership needs
  • Required on-site support during:
    • Unplanned outages
    • Emergency situations
    • Turnarounds

Ideal Candidate Profile

  • Strong systems-thinking mindset with asset-level perspective
  • Experience supporting live operations in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to coordinate across multiple engineering disciplines
  • Solid understanding of process safety, risk management, and MOC processes
  • Proven ability to prioritize competing demands and drive issues to resolution
