A leading energy operator is seeking an experienced Cost Controller to support its onshore upstream projects portfolio. This role is suited to a detail?driven project controls professional who enjoys partnering with delivery teams to ensure financial accuracy, disciplined cost control, and effective capital management.


About the Role

You will be responsible for delivering program and project control measures from fund approval through to close-out. This includes cost governance, performance reporting, variance analysis, and supporting compliance with corporate and JV requirements.


Key Responsibilities

Budgeting & Forecasting

  • Contribute to annual and multi?year capital budget development.
  • Monitor and manage approved budgets, ensuring alignment with thresholds and targets.
  • Support monthly internal and quarterly external capital forecast submissions.

Project Controls

  • Provide cost and schedule variance analysis to support major project delivery.
  • Maintain and enhance cost control processes including EVM, ETC/EAC analysis, accruals, commitment reviews, and internal audits.
  • Manage cost, schedule, and execution data aligned with approved breakdown structures.

Reporting & Insights

  • Prepare and present program and project performance reports.
  • Translate large datasets into clear, actionable insights for stakeholders.

Stakeholder & Compliance

  • Partner with project managers, scope owners, and execution leads on financial performance.
  • Ensure compliance with authority limits, governance standards, and JV agreements.
  • Support change management processes related to scope, schedule, and cost.
  • Identify and mitigate financial risks, including FX sensitivities.

Continuous Improvement

  • Analyse cost and execution trends to refine capital accuracy.
  • Provide integrated cost planning across the project lifecycle.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Commerce, Engineering, or related discipline.
  • 3+ years’ experience in project controls or project services on major capital projects.
  • Experience in oil & gas, mining, or other major resource industries.
  • Proven experience managing budgets over A$25M per annum.
  • Proficiency in visualisation tools such as Spotfire or Power BI, and strong capability in Microsoft Office.
  • Experience with large project systems (e.g., PRISM, SAP) is highly regarded.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to support non-financial stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in team environments.
  • High attention to detail with the ability to manage complex datasets.
  • Formal Project Management qualifications are desirable but not essential.
