Instrument Engineer

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Instrument Engineer to join a major oil and gas development project in the Basra region of Iraq. The Instrument Engineer will provide critical I&C engineering support on a large-scale EPC project, working alongside multidisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality engineering solutions for a new central processing facility with a capacity of 210 kbopd.
Role Context
This position supports the Associated Gas Upstream Project Phase 2, which involves the development of the Ratawi oil field with approximately 221 wells feeding a newly constructed central processing facility built to international standards. The Instrument Engineer will work within a complex, multicultural environment on a project that emphasizes technical quality, safety culture enhancement, and cost optimization while managing multiple interfaces with related infrastructure projects.
About the Role
The Instrument Engineer will contribute to identifying safe-by-design opportunities and support the I&C Engineering Lead to ensure all activities are delivered on schedule, within budget, and to high quality standards. This position involves reviewing and approving I&C engineering designs, participating in technical evaluations, and ensuring compliance with international standards and company engineering practices.
Key Responsibilities
- Contribute to identifying safe by design opportunities to eliminate, avoid, reduce, or mitigate HSE risks during construction
- Support I&C Engineering Lead to ensure all activities are delivered on schedule, within budget, and to high quality standards considering past projects lessons learned
- Ensure I&C engineering documentation produced by the contractor, including Master Document Register, is fit for purpose
- Review and approve I&C engineering designs, drawings, and specifications to verify they meet project requirements and regulatory standards
- Support management of interfaces with other project packages
- Report to I&C Lead Engineer for all engineering-related matters, in managing contractors, suppliers, and other stakeholders
- Participate in technical bid evaluations performed by EPC Contractor, including vendor clarifications
- Review vendor documentation and support resolution of technical issues during fabrication, testing and delivery
- Support project milestones such as 3D model reviews, Project Reviews, and readiness reviews
- Participate in HAZOP, Safety Integrity Level (SIL) assessment and Safety Instrumented Function (SIF) identification workshops
- Participate in applicable Factory Acceptance Tests as required
- Support management of design changes, ensuring all modifications are properly evaluated, documented, and communicated
- Work closely with Engineering discipline engineers, such as Process, Pipeline, Electrical, Civil and Structural, Technical Safety, Mechanical and Piping to integrate quality and safety considerations into all I&C engineering work
- Identify technical risks and develop mitigation strategies to minimize their impact on the project
- Ensure that any I&C engineering issues are promptly addressed and that all solutions are effectively communicated to stakeholders
- Develop and maintain I&C engineering quality standards, ensuring all deliverables meet quality requirements
- Work in close collaboration with the Quality Lead where required to ensure compliance and address any quality concerns
- Provide I&C engineering support to procurement and construction teams, ensuring alignment throughout the project phases
- Identify opportunities for improving I&C engineering processes and procedures to increase efficiency and reduce costs
- Share lessons learned and incorporate them into future I&C engineering activities to enhance project delivery
Required Experience & Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Instrumentation Engineering
- Minimum 8 years in I&C engineering practice, preferably in large-scale oil and gas sectors
- 5 years in a leadership role overseeing I&C engineering activities including geotechnical and topographical surveys, particularly in EPC projects
- Experience working with EPC contractors and vendors in a multicultural project environment
- Strong technical understanding of I&C engineering practices
- Good knowledge of international standards (IEC, ISA, ISO) and company engineering practices
- Familiarity with instrumentation databases and engineering tools (e.g. SPI / INTOOLS or equivalent)
- Fluency in English
- Strong leadership and communication skills
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities
- Ability to work collaboratively in a multicultural environment
- Effective working with multidisciplinary teams
