The Lead Electrical Engineer will provide technical leadership and electrical engineering expertise to Client and its customers across a portfolio of large and complex projects. This role is accountable for the quality, consistency, and delivery of electrical engineering services, while providing discipline leadership, mentorship, and technical governance within the Canada West Electrical Engineering team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as the Electrical Engineering discipline lead on large and complex projects, providing technical direction, leadership, and oversight to multi-disciplinary project teams.

  • Plan, manage, and deliver electrical engineering services in accordance with Client, client, and applicable statutory and regulatory requirements, ensuring delivery is on time and within approved budgets.

  • Provide technical governance for electrical engineering deliverables, ensuring quality, consistency, and adherence to Client standards, client specifications, and applicable codes and standards.

  • Lead scope definition, work planning, resourcing, and execution of electrical engineering work packages, including coordination of workshare and execution strategies where appropriate.

  • Monitor and control engineering progress, man-hours, and deliverables against approved project budgets and schedules; proactively manage changes in scope through formal change management processes.

  • Provide technical leadership and support during procurement, construction, and commissioning activities, including review and approval of requisitions, technical bid evaluations, vendor documentation, and purchase orders.

  • Serve as a senior technical interface with clients, project management teams, and external stakeholders to resolve technical issues, manage expectations, and ensure alignment on scope, quality, and delivery.

  • Identify technical risks, interface issues, and execution challenges early; develop and implement practical, fit-for-purpose solutions.

  • Provide mentorship, technical guidance, and professional development support to junior and intermediate Electrical Engineers, Designers, and discipline team members.

  • Support continuous improvement initiatives within the Electrical Engineering discipline, including development of standards, templates, procedures, and lessons learned.

Technical and Industry Experience

  • Extensive experience delivering electrical engineering services on large, multidisciplinary industrial projects (e.g., energy, chemicals, mining, power, or heavy industrial facilities).

  • Strong working knowledge of electrical engineering deliverables, including:

    • Single Line Diagrams

    • Electrical Area Classification Drawings

    • Cable Schedules and Cable Routing

    • Motor Control Schematics

    • Power Distribution Studies

    • Equipment Layouts and Electrical Room Layouts

    • Electrical Equipment Specifications and Datasheets

    • Load Lists and Electrical Load Calculations

    • Earthing/Grounding and Lightning Protection Systems

    • Construction Work Packages and Engineering Work Packages

  • Working knowledge of electrical system studies and calculations, including:

    • Load flow and power system analysis

    • Short circuit and arc flash studies

    • Motor starting and voltage drop studies

    • Harmonic analysis

  • Experience participating in and supporting HAZOP/LOPA and other formal safety and risk assessment reviews.

  • Strong understanding of project scope definition, execution planning, and delegation of work across TA/NTA or multi-office execution models.

  • Familiarity with engineering execution systems, document management platforms, and project controls processes.

Education – Qualifications, Accreditation, Training

Required:

  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) registered with APEGA or eligible for immediate registration.

  • Accredited Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (or closely related discipline).

  • Extensive hands-on experience in electrical engineering design and delivery on major capital projects.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead technical teams and provide discipline-level leadership on complex projects.

  • Strong communication, stakeholder engagement, and technical problem-solving skills.
