Airswift is seeking a Process Safety Engineer to work with one of our O&G clients in Fort Saskatchewan, AB on a 1-year contract.
Preference: Local (Edmonton Region)
Schedule: Mon–Fri, 8am–5pm (Every third Friday off)
Work Mode: Hybrid (Minimum 3 days/week onsite)
Contract Term: 1–2 years
About the Role
We are seeking a highly skilled Process Safety Engineer to join our team at the Scotford Energy & Chemicals Park. This is a unique opportunity to contribute directly to the safety and reliability of one of Canada’s largest integrated energy and chemicals facilities.
What You’ll Do
Lead Technical Process Safety & Assure Relief System Designs
• Technical assurance of PRV/PVSV sizing and relief scenario analysis.
• Apply strong knowledge of hydraulics and flare system design principles.
• Guide EPC partners in developing technically sound equipment specifications.
• Review and critique P&IDs, mechanical flow diagrams, and cause and effect matrices.
• Provide technical assurance across pumps, vessels, tanks, and safeguarding systems.
Facilitate High Quality Hazard Reviews & Risk Assessments
• Facilitate HAZIDs, HAZOPs, LOPAs, SIL assessments, and other risk-based workshops (Lead 5 year Unit HAZOP revalidations and project PHAs)
• Evaluate safety instrumented functions (including SIF summing) and safety layer performance.
• Apply HEMP and other process safety methodologies to ensure robust risk management.
• Support plant change reviews and provide expert guidance for project risk workshops.
Perform Advanced Modelling & Scenario Analysis
• Conduct fire, explosion, and dispersion modelling using tools such as FRED or PHAST.
• Identify credible scenarios and drive meaningful risk insights.
Engage with Operations & Enable Safer Decisions
• Partner with Operations, Engineering, and Project teams to strengthen barrier management.
• Coach and train operations personnel on process safety hazards and barrier effectiveness.
• Provide practical, actionable recommendations to improve operational safety outcomes.
Deliver Clear Reporting & Senior Leadership Assurance
• Develop comprehensive reports summarizing findings, recommendations, and action plans.
• Present ALARP assessments and risk tolerability results to senior leaders.
Drive Continuous Improvement & Knowledge Sharing
• Promote lessons learned and best practices across the site and project teams.
• Apply human factors, operability, and maintainability principles to improve design quality.

What You Bring
• BSc in Chemical, Mechanical, or related Engineering discipline.
• 7+ years of experience in Process Safety or Process Engineering in refining, upgrading, or petrochemicals,
• Minimum of 3 years in HAZOP/LOPA facilitation.
• Functional Safety certification is an advantage
• Experience with UniSim, HYSYS, and Flarenet.
• Experience with dispersion/explosion modelling tools (PHAST, FRED, or equivalent).
• Strong knowledge of key codes/standards: API 520/521, API 537, API 754, ASME Sec VIII.
• Excellent facilitation, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
• Demonstrated leadership and the ability to work effectively in diverse, cross functional teams.
