Position Overview

Our client is seeking a Regulatory Affairs Lead to support the expansion of its business in Japan, with responsibility for regulatory and policy matters related to energy as well as marine and coastal development–related sectors.

This role focuses on monitoring and analyzing political, policy, and regulatory developments in the Japanese market and providing practical regulatory advice to business and project teams. The position also serves as a key interface with government bodies, regulators, and industry associations.
The role works closely with APAC and global teams to support and advance regulatory initiatives in Japan.


Key Responsibilities

Internal / Hands-on Responsibilities

  • Monitor political, policy, and regulatory developments and assess their impact on the business, identifying risks and opportunities and sharing insights with internal stakeholders and APAC teams
  • Analyze regulatory and policy information and translate it into clear, practical input for project teams and senior management
  • Support the development and implementation of regulatory-related initiatives in collaboration with domestic and international teams
  • Track regulatory, media, and public opinion trends affecting energy, marine and coastal development, and infrastructure-related businesses, and support the development of appropriate response measures

External / Stakeholder Engagement

  • Act as the point of responsibility for regulatory and policy engagement related to energy, marine and coastal development, and infrastructure-related businesses in Japan
  • Build and maintain productive relationships with government authorities, regulators, and industry associations at both national and local levels
  • Support project development through stakeholder engagement, public consultation responses, and ongoing dialogue with relevant parties
  • Coordinate with external legal and regulatory advisors to help address regulatory challenges and implement agreed response actions

Qualifications & Experience

  • Professional experience in regulatory affairs, government relations, energy, marine development, or infrastructure-related sectors (approximately 8+ years)
  • Proven experience engaging with and coordinating across Japanese regulators, relevant ministries, and industry associations
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze policy and regulatory issues and explain their implications for business or project development
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with both internal and external stakeholders
  • Business-level fluency in Japanese and English (written and spoken)
