Senior Pipeline Engineer – Position Description


Position Title: Senior Pipeline Engineer
Location: Doha, Qatar
Department: Engineering



Position Summary


The Senior Pipeline Engineer is responsible for providing advanced technical expertise and leadership in pipeline engineering. This role will function as the Lead Pipeline Engineer on small to mid?sized projects, overseeing discipline-related technical work, schedules, and deliverables. The position operates with minimal supervision and may provide guidance to junior engineers and designers. Work is periodically reviewed by the Chief Pipeline Engineer to ensure alignment with project objectives and industry standards.



Key Responsibilities


Technical & Project Execution

  • Serve as the Lead Pipeline Engineer for smaller projects, ensuring quality and timely completion of all pipeline engineering deliverables.
  • Independently prepare, review, and finalize discipline-specific project specifications.
  • Perform and review complex pipeline engineering calculations, including but not limited to:

    • Wall thickness calculations
    • Highway and railroad crossing designs (API 1102)
    • Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) design
    • Minimum bending radius / roping calculations
    • Wheel load, hydrotest, buoyancy, reinforcement, and allowable span calculations
  • Prepare requisitions for materials, equipment, and inquiries in coordination with the Procurement team.
  • Prepare pipe tallies and effectively communicate design changes within the project team.

Vendor & Procurement Interface

  • Independently prepare technical bid evaluations for equipment, bulk materials, and subcontracted services.
  • Review and approve vendor drawings, ensuring compliance with project requirements and standards.

Pipeline Engineering Deliverables & Studies

  • Develop or review engineering studies and plans such as:

    • Hydrotest plans
    • Class location studies
    • High Consequence Area (HCA) assessments
    • HDD design packages
    • Stress analysis
  • Contribute to site layouts, plot plans, access roads, storage yards, and major pipeline equipment arrangements (launchers, receivers, MLVs, etc.).

Routing, Permitting & Field?Related Tasks

  • Participate in pipeline routing, Right?of?Way (ROW) selection, workspace selection, and alignment sheet reviews.
  • Support preparation of permit drawings for:

    • Road and railroad crossings
    • Wetland and waterbody crossings
  • Assist with FERC?related tasks (where applicable), flood mapping, hazard crossing mitigation, and material requisitions.

Standards & Technical Specifications

  • Develop and maintain technical content for pipeline standards and specifications, including:

    • Line specifications
    • Launcher/receiver barrel specifications
    • 3R elbows, high?yield fittings
    • Internal and external coating specifications

Construction Drawings & Documentation

Prepare, review, or approve construction?level drawings such as:

  • Alignment sheets
  • Launcher/receiver drawings
  • Hydrotest plan drawings
  • HDD design drawings
  • Erosion and sediment control drawings
  • MLV site drawings
  • Road, railroad, wetland, and waterbody permit drawings
  • Plats and related documentation

Minimum Qualifications required

  • Minimum 10 years of experience in pipeline engineering, operations, or construction.
  • Strong knowledge of relevant pipeline design codes, standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Familiarity with permitting requirements and industry best practices.
  • Proficient in engineering software; GIS knowledge is considered an asset.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and leadership abilities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Qatar Engineering License (MME/MMUP/UPDA) required.
  • Bilingual capability is an advantage.

Education requirements: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Civil, or related discipline).
  • PE or EIT certification preferred.
