Senior Safety Engineer - Permitting & Environmental is a technical role supporting engineering projects that require close coordination between design, regulatory requirements, and environmental permitting.

Role Context

This position sits within an engineering environment where permitting, environmental assessments, and regulatory requirements must be aligned with project delivery from early design through to detailed execution.

About the Role

Senior Safety Engineer - Permitting & Environmental will support the delivery of regulatory compliance, permitting, and environmental activities across multidisciplinary engineering projects. The role focuses on integrating requirements into project design and supporting coordinated engagement with authorities and project teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead regulatory compliance, permitting and environmental activities across multidisciplinary engineering projects.
  • Integrate permitting requirements into early design phases, including concept, FEED, and detailed design.
  • Manage and coordinate Dutch environmental permitting processes, including authority engagement.
  • Provide expertise on environmental regulations and compliance, emissions to air, soil, and water, EIA deliverables, and BAT/BREF and regulatory frameworks.
  • Act as the key interface between engineering teams, clients, and regulatory authorities.
  • Identify permitting risks early and implement practical, cost-effective solutions.
  • Support project delivery by managing scope, schedule, and budgets for the discipline.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement by applying innovative tools, methods, and digital solutions.

Required Experience & Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Strong experience in regulatory compliance, permitting, or Safety Engineering, preferably in the (petro-)chemical or industrial sector.
  • Solid knowledge of Dutch permitting frameworks, PGS guidelines and environmental legislation, EIA processes and environmental assessments.
  • Experience embedding regulatory requirements into engineering design processes.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in multidisciplinary and international teams.
  • Excellent communication skills in Dutch and English.
