Job Purpose Statement

Our client is seeking an experienced SCADA & Controls Commissioning Lead to support the delivery and commissioning of a large-scale high-voltage transmission and renewable energy network. Working within the Commissioning Team, the successful candidate will play a critical role in the commissioning of 220kV/33kV substations, renewable generation facilities, battery energy storage systems, power management systems, and associated control and communication infrastructure.

This position offers the opportunity to work on a technically complex and fast-paced energy project involving specialised equipment and advanced automation technologies. The role will work closely with engineering, technology, operations, and project delivery teams to ensure successful integration and commissioning of SCADA, control, communication, and automation systems in line with project and operational requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide technical support and advanced troubleshooting during commissioning activities, ensuring issues are resolved efficiently and system performance is optimised.
  • Configure, modify, test, and commission RTU and SCADA systems for integration with both existing and new electrical infrastructure.
  • Coordinate with engineering, operations, technology, and project teams to ensure control system requirements are incorporated into project delivery and commissioning plans.
  • Develop and execute commissioning procedures, test plans, Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), Site Acceptance Tests (SAT), and other verification activities to ensure compliance with design specifications and operational requirements.
  • Support the commissioning and integration of substation automation systems, renewable energy control systems, battery energy storage systems, and power management systems.
  • Review, update, and maintain commissioning documentation, communication diagrams, electrical schematics, and as-built drawings.
  • Ensure commissioning activities are conducted in accordance with quality management requirements and all necessary quality documentation is completed.
  • Work collaboratively with vendors, contractors, and multidisciplinary project teams to achieve safe and successful project outcomes.
  • Undertake site-based commissioning activities and travel as required on a rostered basis.

Qualifications, Skills & Experience

  • Minimum 5 years' experience in Electrical Control Systems within the power utility, transmission, distribution, generation, or renewable energy sectors.
  • Demonstrated experience with substation automation systems and/or power generation control systems.
  • Proven ability to design, configure, commission, troubleshoot, and support RTU, HMI, SCADA, and industrial network systems.
  • Experience interpreting control system requirements and developing or updating Functional Design Specifications (FDS).
  • Strong knowledge of industrial communication protocols including Modbus, DNP3, IEC 60870-5-104, and IEC 61850.
  • Experience with Siemens A8000, SEL RTAC RTUs, or similar platforms will be highly regarded.
  • Experience with SCADA platforms such as SICAM SCC, Ignition, SEL Diagram Builder, or equivalent systems will be advantageous.
  • Knowledge of inverter-based control systems, renewable energy facility control systems, and battery energy storage systems is desirable.
  • Experience programming and commissioning IEC 61131-based control systems, including Ladder Logic, Structured Text, and Function Block programming.
  • Understanding of IEC 62443 cybersecurity principles and their application within industrial control system environments.
  • Practical experience in network architecture design, routing, switching, and secure communications for operational technology and control systems.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Control Systems Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or a related discipline, or an equivalent electrical trade qualification supported by relevant industry experience.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, excellent stakeholder management capabilities, and the ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Willingness to undertake regular travel and work within a site-based roster environment.
