Job Title: Instrumentation and Controls Engineer II
Duration: 1 year
Schedule: Monday to Friday, 8 to 5, with occasional overtime by approval
Location: Baytown, TX
This opportunity sits within a refinery and chemical complex environment supporting automation, PLC-based industrial control systems, and electrical design activities across pilot plants and research facilities. The role offers involvement in control logic development, troubleshooting, system integration, commissioning, and process control improvement work, with exposure to a wide range of custom automation systems. Required Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering specialty, or equivalent professional experience
Required Experience:
- Experience in design, development, programming, testing, and troubleshooting of PLC-based industrial control systems
- Experience with system integration, commissioning, startup, functional testing, loop checks, and I/O verification for control and electrical systems
- Experience producing and reviewing electrical drawings and documentation, including schematics, control panel layouts, PLC enclosures, and cable schedules
- Experience in selection, application, and ISA data sheet specification of instrumentation and control hardware including pressure, temperature, and level instruments, control valves, shutdown valves, and fire and gas detection
- Experience analyzing maintenance records, instrument reliability, failure modes, and equipment strategies for instrumentation and control systems
Required Skills:
- Strong knowledge of discipline design standards, specifications, codes, and appropriate safety criteria
- Ability to design PLC panels and control enclosures and generate bills of materials
- Ability to develop and implement shutdown and safety logic using cause and effect matrices
- Ability to maintain, update, and troubleshoot existing control and electrical systems to improve reliability, safety, and performance
- Ability to read and interpret programming documentation, electrical schematics, and P&IDs
- Proficiency with AutoCAD
- Proficiency in data collection and analysis using SAP, Analytics for Excel, Tableau, and process historian and visualization software tools
- Ability to perform process control philosophy and stability reviews, control logic updates, and loop tuning
- Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, communication, facilitation, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to adapt to tight deadlines, heavy workloads, and changing priorities
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite
- Fluent English for technical and business communication
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of ladder logic, function block, and structured text programming
- Hands-on experience with Allen-Bradley, National Instrument cRIO and cDAQ controllers, Siemens S7 and Simatic 545/555, GE Rx3i, RSTi, VersaMax, Proficy, and Automation Direct platforms
- Knowledge of industrial networking protocols including Ethernet/IP, Modbus/RTU, and RS-485/422/232
- Oil and gas experience
