DESIGNER / DRAFTSMAN — LEAD & LEVEL II

Deployable Energy

Position Summary

This job family supports engineering drawing, 2D/3D modeling, design documentation, configuration control, and cross-functional design delivery within a growing nuclear energy organization. Candidates may be considered for either the Lead or Level II position based on experience, technical depth, leadership capability, and demonstrated scope of responsibility.

Lead Designer / Draftsman

Level focus: Senior, hands-on technical leadership. Establishes and scales drafting/design capability, sets standards and workflows, leads technical reviews, resolves complex multidisciplinary issues, mentors team members, and remains personally engaged in high-priority design work.

Designer / Draftsman II

Level focus: Experienced individual contributor. Produces and updates drawings, models, assemblies, layouts, BOMs, and design packages; applies established standards; coordinates with engineers and designers; resolves routine drawing discrepancies; supports document control, PDM/EPDM workflows, and design-process improvements; and escalates complex technical or configuration decisions to the Lead or responsible engineer.

Functional Scope

Engineering Drafting - Develop and oversee engineering drawings that accurately communicate design intent, tolerances, requirements, and technical specifications.

2D and 3D Design - Create and manage detailed 2D drawings and 3D models supporting product development, analysis, manufacturing, and configuration control.

CAD Standards - Establish, maintain, and enforce CAD standards, templates, libraries, and best practices across the organization.

Drawing and Model Development - Produce and review detailed components, assemblies, layouts, and system-level models throughout the design lifecycle.

Design Documentation - Generate and control engineering documentation including drawings, BOMs, specifications, and technical packages.

Drawing Review and Checking - Lead drawing verification activities to ensure quality, accuracy, completeness, and compliance with established standards.

Configuration and Revision Control - Manage drawing revisions and configuration baselines to maintain traceability and document integrity.

Engineering Systems and Software Support - Support engineering software administration, implementation, migration, and workflow development.

PDM/EPDM Management - Establish or support product-data-management practices to maintain controlled engineering data and release workflows.

Engineering Information Management - Maintain engineering information integrity across documents, models, revisions, and technical systems.

Manufacturing and Supplier Documentation - Support fabrication, procurement, supplier communication, and vendor documentation with controlled design output.

Cross-Functional Design Integration - Coordinate design activity across Mechanical, Electrical, Systems, Manufacturing, Quality, Project, and other engineering functions.

Technical Infrastructure Development - Help build scalable drafting/design tools, standards, procedures, and technical infrastructure as the organization grows.

Team Development - Mentor junior designers/drafters, review work, transfer knowledge, and maintain a hands-on technical presence.

Technical Leadership

Establish and maintain discipline-specific engineering standards, methodologies, procedures, and best practices.

Lead and participate in technical reviews, design reviews, and technical decision-making.

Identify and resolve complex multidisciplinary engineering issues involving drawing quality, configuration, design-system workflows, or documentation.

Maintain a high level of personal technical engagement while providing direction to junior team members.

Engineering / Technical Execution

Personally produce and oversee complex drawings, models, layouts, assemblies, and design documentation.

Ensure drawing and model packages accurately reflect approved engineering requirements and design intent.

Support engineering teams through concept, detailed design, testing, fabrication, supplier engagement, and design-change implementation.

Drive disciplined checking, revision control, configuration management, and document-release practices.

Support engineering-tool implementation, migration, workflow improvement, and user adoption where required.

Team & Capability Development

Help establish and grow the drafting/design capability within the organization.

Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior and early-career personnel.

Support technical assessment of future team members.

Develop repeatable drafting/design practices and workflows that support continued organizational growth.

Promote knowledge transfer, accountability, and continuous technical development.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

Partner with engineering leadership, project leaders, and adjacent technical disciplines.

Collaborate with quality, safety, licensing/regulatory, testing, manufacturing, operations, supply chain, and project delivery functions.

Support multidisciplinary technical integration across concurrent projects.

Interface with suppliers, manufacturers, laboratories, engineering partners, and other external stakeholders as required.

Safety & Quality

Champion a strong quality culture and disciplined engineering execution.

Promote controlled technical documentation, traceability, configuration integrity, and risk-informed decision-making.

Maintain technical rigor while operating effectively in a fast-moving, evolving organization.

Required Qualifications

Demonstrated hands-on technical experience with engineering drawings, CAD systems, design documentation, and controlled-release workflows.

Experience leading complex drafting/design work, projects, workstreams, or small technical teams.

Experience establishing or improving drawing standards, CAD/PDM workflows, configuration practices, or engineering-documentation systems.

Ability to operate successfully within a growing organization where processes and capabilities are still being developed.

Demonstrated adaptability, comfort with ambiguity, hands-on ownership, and ability to contribute immediately in a lean, entrepreneurial organization.

Level-Specific Qualifications

Lead: Approximately 10+ years of relevant drafting, design, CAD, or engineering-technology experience. Demonstrated ownership of complex workstreams or small technical teams, drawing-checking authority, standards development, CAD/PDM or configuration-workflow improvement, mentoring, and independent resolution of complex design-documentation issues.

Level II: Approximately 5–10 years of relevant drafting, design, CAD, or engineering-technology experience. Demonstrated ability to independently develop accurate drawings and 2D/3D models from specifications, sketches, layouts, and engineering direction; coordinate with design originators; maintain production commitments; apply revision and document-control requirements; and contribute to moderately complex assignments with periodic guidance.

Education for either level: Formal technical training, an associate degree, technical certification, or equivalent experience in drafting, design, CAD, engineering technology, or a related field; a higher qualification is welcomed.

Preferred Qualifications

Advanced proficiency with relevant 2D and 3D CAD platforms.

Experience with PDM/EPDM, configuration-management systems, document-control systems, or engineering-data environments.

Experience supporting manufacturing, fabrication, procurement, testing, suppliers, or installation activities.

Exposure to nuclear energy, power generation, aerospace, defense, oil & gas, shipbuilding, advanced manufacturing, or another highly regulated technical environment.

Experience supporting multidisciplinary or matrixed engineering organizations.
