Mechanical Engineer (Offshore Operations & Maintenance)

Job Purpose
The Mechanical Engineer is responsible for ensuring the integrity, reliability, availability, and safe operation of offshore oil and gas production and processing facilities through effective mechanical maintenance management. The role oversees maintenance activities for rotating and static equipment, packaged units, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, valves, HVAC systems, lifting equipment, safety systems, and accommodation facilities while ensuring compliance with operational, technical, and HSE requirements.
The position plays a key role in maximizing asset performance, minimizing downtime, supporting production continuity, and maintaining the highest standards of safety and operational excellence.
Key Responsibilities
Maintenance & Asset Integrity
- Lead and coordinate mechanical maintenance activities for offshore production and processing facilities.
- Ensure the integrity, reliability, and availability of rotating and static equipment, pressure systems, valves, HVAC systems, lifting equipment, and safety-critical equipment.
- Develop, implement, and continuously improve preventive, predictive, corrective, and condition-based maintenance programs.
- Review and update maintenance procedures to align with company standards and industry best practices.
- Participate in equipment commissioning, start-up, shutdown, turnaround, and recommissioning activities.
- Conduct inspections of installations and equipment to verify compliance with technical specifications, operational requirements, and safety standards.
- Analyze equipment failures and implement corrective actions to improve long-term reliability.
Work Planning & Execution
- Review maintenance notifications, assess priorities, and determine manpower, materials, tools, and equipment requirements.
- Plan daily and weekly maintenance activities and allocate resources effectively.
- Coordinate permit-to-work activities and ensure proper isolation, site preparation, and authorization before work commencement.
- Monitor maintenance execution, provide technical guidance, and ensure completion of work in accordance with approved procedures.
- Perform final inspections, testing, and verification before equipment handover and start-up.
Technical Support & Troubleshooting
- Lead complex fault-finding and maintenance activities on critical offshore equipment.
- Diagnose issues through operational analysis, equipment testing, performance monitoring, and maintenance records reviews.
- Conduct alignment, overhaul, repair, and troubleshooting of pumps, compressors, turbines, and other rotating equipment.
- Monitor equipment condition using predictive maintenance techniques, including vibration analysis and condition monitoring.
- Identify recurring failures and recommend engineering improvements and reliability enhancement initiatives.
Contractor & Resource Management
- Supervise technicians, contractors, and maintenance personnel involved in mechanical activities.
- Coordinate contractor work scopes and ensure compliance with permit-to-work and HSE requirements.
- Monitor contractor performance, progress, and quality of work.
- Verify timesheets, material usage, and completion of assigned activities.
Materials & CMMS Management
- Manage maintenance records, work orders, notifications, and technical documentation.
- Utilize CMMS systems (SAP or equivalent) for maintenance planning, work order management, reporting, scheduling, and inventory control.
- Review and evaluate material requirements and technical specifications to ensure suitability for operational applications.
- Coordinate spare parts management and maintain accurate inventory records.
Shutdown & Turnaround Support
- Participate in the planning and execution of plant shutdowns, major overhauls, and turnaround activities.
- Prepare work scopes, schedules, manpower requirements, and risk assessments.
- Support equipment start-up, commissioning, and performance verification following maintenance activities.
Training & Mentoring
- Provide technical guidance and on-the-job coaching to maintenance personnel and junior engineers.
- Support workforce competency development initiatives and technical training programs.
- Promote knowledge sharing and continuous improvement within the maintenance team.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
- Strong understanding of rotating equipment, static equipment, process systems, and offshore production facilities.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, P&IDs, datasheets, maintenance manuals, and technical documentation.
Experience
- Minimum 10 years of experience in mechanical maintenance, troubleshooting, installation, and repair within the oil & gas, petrochemical, LNG, refinery, or offshore energy industries.
- Proven experience with rotating equipment such as pumps, compressors, turbines, and associated auxiliary systems.
- Experience managing offshore maintenance activities, shutdowns, and equipment reliability programs.
- Hands-on experience with CMMS platforms, preferably SAP.
Required Skills

- Ensure all maintenance activities comply with company HSE policies, procedures, and industry regulations.
- Promote a strong safety culture and lead by example in all work activities.
- Conduct risk assessments and hazard identification prior to work execution.
- Participate in incident investigations and corrective action implementation.
- Support emergency response and incident management processes.
- Ensure personnel competence and compliance with mandatory offshore safety requirements.
- Champion continuous improvement in HSE performance and operational excellence.
Working Conditions
- Offshore rotational assignment.
- Requires extensive field presence, including frequent walking, climbing, and working in offshore environmental conditions.
- Combination of field supervision and office-based planning, reporting, and technical review activities.
- May be required to provide technical support and decision-making during equipment failures, plant upsets, shutdowns, and emergency situations on a 24/7 basis.
Preferred Certifications
- Offshore survival certification (e.g. BOSIET/TBOSIET).
- H?S Safety Certification.
- Permit to Work (PTW) certification.
- Firefighting and Emergency Response training.
- Offshore medical fitness certification.
- Vibration Analysis or Reliability Engineering certifications are advantageous.
