Mud Engineer – Onshore Geothermal / Oil & Gas Operations

Position Summary

The Drilling Fluids Engineer is responsible for providing onsite drilling fluid services on a super-light drilling rig utilizing Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD) systems. The role involves monitoring, testing, maintaining, and optimizing drilling fluid performance to ensure safe, efficient, and cost-effective drilling operations while maintaining full compliance with HSE and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide onsite drilling fluid engineering services throughout drilling operations on a super-light rig utilizing MPD technology.

  • Test, monitor, control, and optimize drilling fluid properties to meet operational requirements and well objectives.

  • Supervise drilling fluid mixing, treatment, storage, and pumping operations during all phases of the drilling program.

  • Analyze drilling fluid performance and provide technical recommendations to improve drilling efficiency, wellbore stability, and operational safety.

  • Monitor and track fluid consumption, inventory, and treatment costs, contributing to cost control and operational performance.

  • Coordinate closely with the Drilling Supervisor, Rig Manager, MPD personnel, contractors, and service providers to achieve project objectives.

  • Ensure effective solids control practices and maintain drilling fluid systems in accordance with operational requirements.

  • Support troubleshooting activities related to drilling fluid performance, losses, contamination, and wellbore instability issues.

  • Prepare accurate daily reports, fluid summaries, and technical recommendations for the drilling management team.

  • Ensure compliance with company procedures, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices.

  • Promote and maintain the highest standards of Health, Safety, Security, and Environmental (HSSE) performance.

  • Support, mentor, and provide technical guidance to junior drilling fluids personnel when required.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Science, Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Chemistry, Geology, or a related discipline.

  • Minimum 10 years of drilling fluids engineering experience in onshore Oil & Gas and/or deep geothermal drilling operations.

  • Minimum 2 years of drilling operations experience within Continental Europe.

  • Strong knowledge of:

    • Drilling fluid systems

    • Solids control equipment and processes

    • Wellbore stability management

    • Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD) operations

    • Hydraulic and drilling optimization principles

  • Proven ability to support drilling campaigns in challenging drilling environments.

Required Certifications

  • IWCF Level 2 (minimum)

  • OPITO H2S

  • MIST or BOSIET

  • OEUK Medical Certificate (or equivalent offshore/onshore medical fitness certification)
