Position Overview

This opportunity is for a Principal Electrical Engineer to lead electrical engineering delivery across a portfolio of oil, gas and chemical projects. The Principal Electrical Engineer will provide technical leadership, oversight and supervision within the electrical engineering function while supporting high-quality, compliant and efficient project execution. This position offers the chance for a Principal Electrical Engineer to guide technical direction, mentor engineering teams and contribute to major multi-disciplinary project outcomes. The role would suit a Principal Electrical Engineer with strong leadership capability and deep technical expertise in electrical distribution and power systems.

Role Context

This role is based in the oil, gas and chemical sector and is situated in the company’s Long Beach, California office. The position supports a portfolio of multi-disciplinary engineering projects and involves close collaboration with project management, clients and other engineering disciplines. The working environment includes design, procurement, construction and commissioning support across project lifecycles.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and oversee electrical engineering delivery across a portfolio of oil, gas and chemical projects.

  • Manage and mentor a team of electrical engineers and designers, assigning tasks and supervising progress.

  • Plan, organise and direct engineering work to achieve safe, high-quality and timely project outcomes.

  • Provide technical leadership on electrical distribution systems, equipment selection, protective relay selection and power management system configuration.

  • Review engineering deliverables and ensure compliance with applicable statutory, regulatory and project requirements.

  • Collaborate with project management, clients and other disciplines to meet project objectives and maintain strong working relationships.

  • Support procurement, construction and commissioning activities, including technical evaluations and engineering input.

  • Identify issues, resolve technical discrepancies and support continuous improvement within the electrical engineering team.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Essential:

    BS or MS degree in Electrical Engineering.

  • Essential:

    Extensive practical experience in electrical engineering within the same or similar industry, including multi-disciplinary project experience.

  • Essential:

    12+ years of experience in the oil and gas industry.

  • Essential:

    Strong technical knowledge of MV and LV electrical distribution systems, equipment selection, protective relay selection and power management system configuration.

  • Essential:

    Experience performing or reviewing power systems studies and protective device settings.

  • Essential:

    Excellent knowledge of electrical engineering fundamentals, applicable standards and statutory and regulatory specifications.

  • Essential:

    Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.

  • Essential:

    Experience with MS Office Suite and relevant electrical engineering software including ETAP and SPL.

  • Essential:

    Professional Engineer status (PE or P. Eng) in the US or Canada.

  • Desirable:

    Relevant postgraduate qualifications in engineering, management, project management or supervisory disciplines.
