About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Principal Mechanical & Piping Designer to join a leading engineering consultancy supporting a portfolio of major mining, minerals processing, and resources projects. This is a senior leadership role responsible for providing technical direction across mechanical and piping design, coordinating multidisciplinary project delivery, and ensuring design excellence throughout all project phases from concept studies and FEED through to EPCM execution, construction support, and commissioning.

Working within a collaborative environment, you will lead complex plant layout and piping design activities, oversee model development and design reviews, and drive innovative engineering solutions that enhance safety, constructability, maintainability, and operational performance. You will also play a key role in coordinating design activities across local and global delivery teams while supporting project execution, business development initiatives, and stakeholder engagement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the development of complex plant layouts, equipment arrangements, and piping systems for major resources projects.
  • Provide technical leadership and oversight for multidisciplinary design and 3D model development activities.
  • Facilitate and lead design reviews, model reviews, constructability assessments, and design verification processes.
  • Develop innovative and efficient design solutions that support project objectives and operational requirements.
  • Ensure designs meet maintainability, operability, accessibility, safety, and quality standards.
  • Coordinate design execution between local and global delivery centres.
  • Support workshare planning, resource allocation, and quality assurance activities across project teams.
  • Review and approve key design deliverables to ensure compliance with project requirements and industry standards.
  • Drive digital engineering and model-based design initiatives.
  • Support proposal development, estimating activities, and project pursuits.
  • Participate in technical workshops, stakeholder meetings, and client presentations.
  • Provide strategic input into project execution planning and delivery strategies.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with project teams and stakeholders.
  • Mentor and develop designers while fostering a culture of technical excellence and continuous improvement.

Requirements

  • Diploma, Advanced Diploma, Associate Degree, or equivalent qualification in Engineering Design.
  • Significant industry experience may be considered in lieu of formal qualifications.
  • 15+ years of experience in mechanical and piping design within the mining, minerals, and resources sectors.
  • Proven experience leading large multidisciplinary design teams on major capital projects.
  • Demonstrated experience across studies, FEED, EPCM delivery, construction support, and commissioning.
  • Strong background in mining and minerals processing facilities.
  • Expertise in areas such as mineral processing plants, materials handling systems, hydromet facilities, underground mining infrastructure, shaft hoisting and ventilation systems, slurry pipelines, process piping systems, model integration, and digital engineering.
  • Advanced proficiency with E3D, Smart3D, Plant 3D, Navisworks, and AutoCAD.
  • Strong technical leadership and decision-making capabilities.
  • Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to influence project outcomes and provide strategic technical direction.
  • Proven mentoring and capability development experience.
  • Strong commitment to safety, quality, innovation, and continuous improvement.
