Safety Coordinator (Turnaround / Refinery & Petrochemical Operations)
Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Safety Coordinator to support major turnaround and maintenance activities within refinery and petrochemical environments. This role is responsible for promoting and maintaining a safe work environment by ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, conducting safety training, leading site audits, investigating incidents, and driving continuous improvement in safety performance.
The ideal candidate will possess extensive field experience supporting large-scale industrial projects, strong leadership capabilities, and a proactive approach to risk management and contractor safety oversight.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead daily safety meetings and toolbox talks for site personnel and contractors.
- Monitor and verify implementation of all turnaround safety processes and procedures.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state/provincial, and local safety regulations, as well as site-specific safety requirements.
- Conduct routine site inspections, safety walks, and audits to identify unsafe conditions and behaviors.
- Investigate incidents, near misses, and unsafe acts, ensuring corrective and preventive actions are implemented effectively.
- Review and verify safety documentation, certifications, and training records for contractor personnel.
- Support contractor onboarding and safety orientation programs.
- Participate in and promote behavioral safety and safety observation programs.
- Analyze incident trends and develop recommendations to reduce operational risks.
- Provide coaching and guidance to supervisors, employees, and contractors regarding safety compliance and best practices.
- Maintain accurate safety records, audit reports, inspection findings, and regulatory documentation.
- Promote strong housekeeping standards and conduct regular inspections of assigned work areas.
- Collaborate with project teams to ensure safe execution of turnaround activities.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Industrial Safety, or a related discipline.
- Minimum 10 years of safety experience within refinery, petrochemical, chemical manufacturing, or heavy industrial environments.
- Strong knowledge of OSHA, MSHA, NFPA, NEC, CGA, and other applicable safety regulations and standards.
- Demonstrated experience conducting safety audits, inspections, workplace assessments, and field coaching.
- Proven incident investigation and root cause analysis experience.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and training delivery skills.
- Strong organizational and project management capabilities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced turnaround environment.
- Strong leadership, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- CSP (Certified Safety Professional) certification preferred.
- Experience supporting large turnaround, shutdown, or outage projects.
- Advanced knowledge of contractor safety management programs.
- Familiarity with fatigue management programs and extended work schedules.
Work Environment & Schedule
- Position primarily supports night shift operations.
- Standard turnaround work schedule with shift turnover meetings.
- Shifts may extend up to 12 hours in accordance with site fatigue management requirements.
- Flexibility to work varying schedules, including weekends and holidays as project demands require.
