Job

Our client is seeking an experienced Senior Electrical Engineer to support the detailed engineering and design of high-voltage substation infrastructure within a major transmission network project. Reporting to the Engineering Manager or Lead Electrical Engineer, this role is responsible for delivering detailed primary electrical designs for substations, ensuring reliable, safe, and cost-effective solutions that meet project, operational, and regulatory requirements.

The successful candidate will play a key role in the design and integration of high-voltage and low-voltage systems, working closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams to develop substation layouts, electrical systems, and associated infrastructure. The position requires strong technical expertise in substation primary design, coordination with civil and structural disciplines, and the ability to provide technical leadership throughout the engineering, procurement, and construction phases of the project lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform detailed primary design engineering for high-voltage substations, ensuring designs comply with project specifications, Australian Standards, and industry best practices.
  • Develop and review substation primary design documentation, including layouts, equipment arrangements, electrical designs, and associated technical deliverables.
  • Specify and provide technical input for high-voltage substation equipment, including transformers, switchgear, busbars, conductors, and associated plant.
  • Coordinate with electrical, civil, structural, and multidisciplinary design teams to ensure effective integration of all substation components.
  • Deliver primary design solutions for outdoor air-insulated substations and associated high-voltage infrastructure.
  • Design and integrate high-voltage and low-voltage systems to achieve reliability, operability, and quality of power supply requirements.
  • Support the design and coordination of underground high-voltage and low-voltage cable systems and their interfaces with substation infrastructure.
  • Conduct engineering reviews, design verification activities, and quality assurance checks to ensure design accuracy and compliance with applicable standards and regulations.
  • Manage engineering modifications, design improvements, and optimisation initiatives throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Contribute to the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of technical standards, engineering procedures, and design methodologies.
  • Provide technical support to procurement, construction, and commissioning teams, including responding to technical queries and resolving design-related issues.
  • Liaise with equipment suppliers, contractors, and project stakeholders to support successful project delivery.
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to graduate, junior, and intermediate engineers, supporting capability development within the engineering team.
  • Contribute to achieving project objectives relating to safety, quality, schedule, and cost performance.

Qualifications, Skills & Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or an equivalent recognised engineering qualification.
  • Demonstrated experience in the detailed design of high-voltage substation projects, preferably within transmission, utilities, mining, energy, or infrastructure sectors.
  • Extensive experience in the primary design of outdoor high-voltage air-insulated substations.
  • Strong knowledge of substation layouts, equipment arrangements, and primary electrical plant design.
  • Experience designing and coordinating underground high-voltage and low-voltage cable systems.
  • Proven ability to work closely with civil and structural engineering teams to coordinate and deliver integrated substation designs.
  • Strong understanding of high-voltage electrical systems, substation equipment, and power system interfaces.
  • Sound knowledge of Australian electrical standards, regulations, and engineering best practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to balance technical excellence with commercial and project delivery objectives.
  • Experience reviewing and producing high-quality engineering documentation, drawings, calculations, and specifications.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make sound engineering decisions in a fast-paced project environment.
  • Effective stakeholder engagement skills with the ability to work collaboratively across engineering, construction, procurement, and project teams.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Well-developed organisational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deliverables simultaneously.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications and standard engineering software tools.
  • Proven ability to mentor and develop junior engineers while contributing positively to team performance.
  • Self-motivated, adaptable, and capable of working effectively within multidisciplinary project environments.
