Position Overview
An experienced Senior Mechanical Engineer (Design) is required to provide technical leadership and deliver mechanical engineering solutions across major studies and capital projects within the mining, bulk materials handling, minerals processing, and heavy industrial sectors. The role will support project development from concept and feasibility studies through detailed design and execution, ensuring engineering deliverables are completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with applicable standards, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and deliver mechanical engineering design activities throughout all stages of project development and execution.
- Ensure mechanical designs comply with relevant legislation, standards, codes, specifications, and engineering best practices.
- Perform engineering calculations, equipment sizing, selection, and technical assessments for material handling and process plant equipment.
- Develop and review engineering deliverables including equipment datasheets, equipment lists, piping schedules, utility consumption schedules, lubrication schedules, tie-in schedules, spare parts schedules, bills of materials, and technical reports.
- Review and provide technical guidance on 3D models, plot plans, layouts, general arrangement drawings, fabrication drawings, construction drawings, and associated design documentation.
- Manage equipment packages through specification development, procurement support, technical evaluations, vendor engagement, and review of supplier documentation.
- Resolve technical issues during design, procurement, construction, and commissioning phases.
- Participate in design reviews, risk assessments, safety reviews, cost estimate reviews, schedule reviews, and other project assurance activities.
- Coordinate effectively with multidisciplinary engineering teams to ensure alignment of project objectives and deliverables.
- Deliver mechanical engineering scope within approved budgets, schedules, and quality requirements.
- Provide technical support throughout project execution and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
- Minimum 15 years of mechanical engineering experience within mining, minerals processing, bulk materials handling, or heavy industrial environments.
- Demonstrated experience across concept studies, prefeasibility studies, feasibility studies, FEED, detailed design, and project execution.
- Strong experience in materials handling systems, including conveyors, transfer chutes, feeders, bins, pumps, and piping systems.
- Proven capability in performing detailed engineering calculations and equipment sizing for bulk handling and process plant applications.
- Experience managing equipment packages from specification through procurement and vendor management.
- Knowledge of dry and wet processing plants, slurry pumping systems, and mineral processing facilities will be highly regarded.
- Experience in construction, commissioning, operations, or maintenance environments is advantageous.
- Exposure to Finite Element Analysis (FEA), 3D modelling, solids modelling, conveyor design software, and Discrete Element Modelling (DEM) is desirable.
- Strong communication, stakeholder management, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary project teams and manage competing priorities.
- Demonstrated commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement.
