Position Overview
This opportunity will support substation and transmission projects, with a strong focus on electrical protection and control activities as part of a power networks team. The role involves delivering complex engineering work across both greenfield and brownfield environments for high-voltage infrastructure. This position is suited to a technically strong engineering professional who can work independently, contribute to proposals, and provide leadership on quality deliverables. The role also offers involvement with multidisciplinary collaboration and site-based project support where required.
Role Context
This position sits within the power networks environment and supports substation and switchyard projects at 69kV and above. Work includes new-build facilities as well as modifications, additions, and upgrades to existing infrastructure. The role will interface with project managers, drafters, civil and structural engineers, field personnel, and external stakeholders, with occasional travel to site for walkdowns.
Key Responsibilities
Deliver complex protection and control engineering assignments for substation and transmission projects across brownfield and greenfield scopes.
Prepare engineering drawings, technical documents, calculations, and other required project deliverables.
Design and implement advanced protection and control schemes for power systems.
Coordinate effectively with multidisciplinary teams including project management, drafting, civil and structural engineering, and field personnel.
Carry out technical audits and reviews to maintain the quality of engineering outputs.
Support proposal development through estimates, scope input, and technical contributions to client presentations.
Provide guidance to junior engineers and act as a lead engineer on complex technical issues.
Ensure document quality and compliance with applicable drawing standards and document management procedures.
Qualifications & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering.
Minimum 8–10 years of experience (Senior) or 12+ years (Principal/Senior Principal) in physical substation design.
Proven experience designing high-voltage substations (69kV and above).
Strong background in power delivery / transmission & distribution (T&D) — generation-only experience will not be considered.
Demonstrated expertise in detailed engineering design, including:
Substation layout design (General Arrangement drawings)
Equipment arrangement (transformers, breakers, CTs/PTs, busbars)
Grounding systems and physical clearances
Experience producing engineering deliverables, including drawings, BOMs, and complete design packages (not limited to review activities).
Solid understanding of electrical codes, standards, and industry practices (IEEE, ANSI, etc.).
Experience contributing to cost estimates and technical proposals is a plus.
Proficiency in substation design and analysis tools (e.g., SKM, ETAP, EasyPower, CYMCAP/CDAC) and drafting tools (AutoCAD or MicroStation).
Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team-based engineering environment.
Professional Engineer (PE) license is preferred for Senior roles and required for Lead/Principal positions.
