What does a civil engineering job involve?

Civil engineers oversee construction projects and use professional expertise to organise on-site resources. They will typically lead, review, assess and manage scopes of work on on-site projects alongside project managers and senior project engineers. 

 The job involves working with site teams to identify issues faced during construction, as well as working alongside design teams to change previous designs when necessary. 

 A civil engineering job description might include:

•  Liaising with and working alongside design teams to implement refinements
• Negotiating modifications with structural engineers and project managers
• Taking responsibility for on-site health and safety
• Making judgements to solve problems
• Scheduling and supervising construction work
• Dealing with supply logistics
• Providing construction management plans
• Scheduling and adjusting each project stage to meet budget and time targets
• Developing technology involved in projects
• Providing technical support to other project positions for specialist aspects
• Analysing and understanding tender documentation 
• Defining discipline lists of deliverables and coordinating them in accordance with project schedules 
• Workforce planning and cost estimates
• Updating technical standards and discipline workflows  

What qualifications and skills do I need as a civil engineer for large projects?

You will require the following qualifications and skills

• A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, or qualifications in structural engineering
• Several years’ of experience, for example on construction or land development projects
• Technical competence and excellent IT and mathematical skills
• Strong teamwork skills and the ability to lead and supervise others
• A thorough  understanding of health and safety legislation for project work
• The capacity to work to strict deadlines and budgets
