Airswift, the global workforce solutions provider for the energy, process and infrastructure sectors, partnered with the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) and UKTI to host a networking event about clean energy projects in the UAE. The event, which took place at the Park Lane Hilton in London, attracted over 140 senior decision-makers from both multi-national and small UK businesses across the water, energy and environmental sectors.

Hosted by His Excellency Saeed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of DEWA and vice chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, the seminar highlighted $21 billion of large scale projects and tenders in Dubai. DEWA is currently implementing major initiatives in the country including generating your own electricity with solar panels (Shams Dubai) and smart applications via smart grids and meters.

One of the key projects highlighted at the event was the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, which is leading the way for the inclusion of renewable resources in Dubai’s energy mix. The park will use photovoltaic (PV) and concentrated solar power (CSP) technologies and will be spilt into a 13 megawatt and 200 megawatt project. The solar park will also include a research and development centre with a specific solar test facility.

The government body also emphasised the need for UK energy expertise for major projects in Dubai including:

  • Consultancy services for the development of a Dubai Green Free Zone strategy and development plan
  • Smart grid interim IT infrastructure
  • Consultancy services for the development of a Green Energy Fund.

Graeme Lewis, managing director of global employment outsourcing at Airswift, presented a market entry workshop at the event to share guidance on entering and operating in the region. Lewis says: “Dubai’s vision is to source 75 per cent of its energy from clean technologies by 2050 and to achieve this it will need to obtain the right skills, talent and expertise from companies worldwide. UK companies have extensive experience across the renewable energy sector and we can assist them in expanding into the region. Our local knowledge combined with our global mobility expertise means that we can ensure a smooth entry and mobilisation process for companies operating in the UAE, enabling them to focus on successful project delivery.”

DEWA will be hosting its 18th water, energy, technology and environment exhibition (WETEX) from the 4th – 6th of October in Dubai. Through these events and its renewable and smart initiatives, the UAE’s vision is to become a global hub and a successful model of the new green economy to enhance the country’s competitiveness and sustainability and preserve its environment for future generations.

Any UK companies interested in exhibiting at WETEX should contact Rich Hadnum at Airswift (rich.hadnum@airswift.com) for more details.
